December Newsletter

Newsletter December 2011

This will be the last newsletter of 2012, the year we had two summers, one in April/May, and another in September/October, with a spring in between. Well that’s how it seemed anyway; still many of you spent many hours on the water perfecting you skills. As a club we have done as good as we can expect in the current climate, with most of our events down on numbers but those who attended had a great time, and we hope to only make them better in the coming years.

We have now winterised the tractors, the marker buoys have been taken in and many boats are in winter storage, but I’m sure spring will be upon us before we know it.

The committee that run the Club on behalf of the members find it increasingly difficult to put in the hours that the club now demands to operate it, especially in the current times when everyone is working harder than usual to earn a living. We really appreciate everything they do and the time they give. Moving forward we need to increase the people on the committee, so that it is less of a chore for those who run the club. We are looking to have at least 12 people on the Committee; this may be over and above the three main positions of Chairman, Treasury and Secretary, making the committee possibly up to 15 people. We are also looking at having a sub-committee of people who can help out with events and looking after the clubhouse etc. We are therefore having a meeting on Sunday 15th January 2012 at 8.00pm to discuss this. We would like anyone who is interested in becoming a committee member, or being on a sub-committee to come along so we can explain what will be expected of them and the benefits of being a Committee member.

Over the winter and early spring we have loads of jobs that need doing at the club so if anyone has time on their hands, please let us know. We will also arrange some work parties to get the jobs done.

We would also like to know what members want in the way of events in 2012 as this is how we raise our money to keep the club going (your membership fees only cover around 50% of the cost of running the club). We hope to issue an online questionnaire in January, so please let us know your thoughts. We will also have a paper copy should you not be online.

We are also considering a day trip to one of the cable lakes for the early in the season, this may also include getting to ride some of the 2012 demo boards etc. courtesy of Tribal Watersports - watch this space.

We hope to see as many of you as possible over the winter months. We have a few events planned so we can all keep in touch, so have a look below and it would be great to see you over the winter.

Tuesday 27th December 12.00pm - Christmas lunchtime at the Club, and weather permitting Christmas Ski

Saturday 31st December 7.30pm - News Year’s Eve at the clubhouse, drinks, disco and food

Sunday 15th January 8.00pm - Open committee meeting to discuss committee vacancies

Saturday 25th February 7.00pm - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, please attend!!!

Saturday 31st March - Deadline for 2012 memberships

Summer Newsletter

Hi all,

Firstly please can we ask that every boat owner and member who receives this Newsletter pass it on to any of their crew and social members to read. We really need everyone that uses the club facilities to know what’s going on and what’s expected of them. We will also circulate copies of it at the clubhouse and post it on the website.

We are now entering the height of the season and let’s hope we get a great few months ahead. The Club is getting busier by the day and by the time you get this Newsletter we will have either hit or be very close to our maximum membership. We may have to put people on a waiting list should we get any more applications. This is great for the Club and we really appreciate so many people wanting to be part of it. The ski zone marker buoys are now in place, this area is for boats towing skiers and wakeboarders etc. No tubes are allowed in this area and all PWC must pass through it at slow speed. We now require all PWC owners and anyone who wishes to drive a PWC to sign a form to say they have read and understood the rules, and that the owner of the PWC has full insurance for that rider and is responsible for them.

Now for the moan bits, sorry! Parking is starting to become an issue and we need to prioritise parking for boat owners. If you are a social member and don’t need access to your vehicle throughout the day, please can you park it to the right of the slipway or along past the “Keep Clear Turning Area”. This will make it easier to park boats and speed up recovery and launching (as the tractor will not have to travel so far to move the boats). This makes it a safer environment for all. Please be courteous with your parking and park straight in the marked bays (not straddling two bays). You may think it’s not busy when you’re parking, but many other members may be turning up later. We will be assessing the parking permit allocation prior to the AGM for next year. If “just being courteous” doesn’t work we will have to reduce the amount of permits available for social, family, and extended family memberships etc. As always tea and coffee is available in the Clubhouse at no extra cost to its members, thanks to the provision of it by the Club and some of the members. But please don’t leave the water boiler switched to anything higher than “ON” as it boils away for no reason, also WE DON’T DO YOUR WASHING UP!

The showers and toilets are getting used to their full potential but again PLEASE leave them as you would like to find them. If the floor is wet “MOP IT” there is a mop in the corridor. We tell members to use the clubhouse like their home for the day and many of you would not leave the showers and toilets in your houses like we sometimes find the club ones - so please do your bit.

Finally last moan! The Clubs facilities are for MEMBERS USE ONLY, this includes, parking area, patio area, equipment (such as skis, kneeboard, tubes, wetsuits and buoyancy aids), toilets, showers, tables and chairs, kitchen and bar area. You need to be NAMED on a boat or social membership. We also need children under 18 to be named on the application forms for insurance purposes, as they are deemed to be members. We do allow members to sign in / bring guests a MAXIMUM of three times, then we expect you either ask them to join as social members or upgrade your membership to accommodate them. Please ask a committee member if your not sure what you need to do. We will be monitoring this and the parking permits over the coming weeks and any offenders will be dealt with accordingly. It is only fair to those who have paid their memberships that EVERYONE follows the Club rules.

Children under the age of 14 must be properly supervised at the club and not left unattended, they are the parent or guardian’s responsibility at all times.

We have had a few questions posed to us about dogs at the Club. Foreness is a designated dog waking beach and as many members have dogs we don’t mind them being bought to the club. Dogs must be kept under control by their owners and never left unattended and under no circumstances are allowed in the kitchen. If these basic rules are not adhered to we will have no option but to insist that all dogs are kept out of the clubhouse and remain on a lead on the patio area at all times. We do not want to do this so please look after your dog at the club.

Now on to the good bits. The bar is doing really well and bringing in the funds we hoped it would to help pay the running costs of the club. There is a great selection of drinks and snacks now available and we hope to open it as much as possible with the volunteers that run it. The pool table is also being enjoyed by many people and has proved to be a great asset to the club. Also the TV is entertaining the kids and giving background music and sports event coverage when members want it, so also a great asset

We have had one slight issue with the tractor when a tyre became punctured on a busy day, but this was dealt with quickly and within a couple of hours was back running again. We continue to ask, please don’t take it in too deep and if you’re the last one to use it, please wash it off; we don’t expect to open the container and find it filthy and covered in salt. We are in the process of sourcing a 2nd tractor but with the prices of tractors going up by 200% in the last couple of years (due to the export market), we are struggling to get another at the right price; but we hope to have this sorted soon. This means that if the current tractor stops working, or we deem it “UNFIT for the purpose” then we will have to use our own vehicles, so take care of it please. If the Club feel that the tractor is damaged by negligence or abuse by a member, then we will be asking that person to pay for damage caused to the tractor, or any equipment damaged as a direct result of such behavior.

RYA training at the club is going really well and over the next couple of years we will slowly introduce the RYA powerboat level 2 as a requirement for all boat owners and drivers of craft within the club. This is already compulsory in most of Europe and we do believe it will also soon be a requirement in the UK inland and coastal waters. This also gives you your ICC if you wish to take your boat abroad. Our instructors are now also accredited to include the PWC training, if you’re a user of such craft or if you’re interested in doing this training please speak to Robin Field or Kelvin Godfrey as we have special rates for club members.

The new Website is now up and running and we thank Adrian for his hard work on this. The Facebook page is also good for banter and to see what people are up to and what’s going on at the club.

Web site www.waterskiclub.co.uk Facebook Foreness Waterski

The lock at the top of the cliff by the golf hut has been changed so that water users of Southern Water can open it. Please close and lock it every time, making sure it can be opened with either padlock.

We have some great events coming up in the near future and the more they’re supported the better the event. This also helps with Club funds and will help to keep memberships down in the future.

Spring Newsletter

Newsletter Spring 2011

Hello and welcome to our Spring newsletter. Yes it is that time of year believe it or not, time to take the covers off, mow the moss that has taken root around the gunwales and windows, take it to your friendly service engineer for a wipe down with an oily rag!!!, put some fresh fuel in it, grease the bearings and check the girl over, as it won’t be long now, and they have promised a good summer!!

The clubhouse is already being used and people are coming out of hibernation, the tractor has undergone its winter overhaul and should be good for another trouble free season, so long as no one tries to give it swimming lessons. Many of the expensive and time consuming problems that were repaired were due to salt water getting into places it shouldn’t. Please make sure it’s washed off if you’re the last one to use it. We have a second tractor lined up to replace the old one sold last year that should be here in a couple of weeks. If anyone wants a refresher on the tractor, then contact one of the committee members and we will arrange a time for this to be done.

We had our AGM at the clubhouse this February, it was well attended and we have now increased the committee to thirteen people. Unfortunately since then we have had some resignations. We would like to thank Chris Lucy for his effort over the years - he will be greatly missed as a senior member of the club. We would also like to thank Gary Lintott for his work and support on the committee. This leaves us with a vacancy within the committee, so if you would like to come aboard and help us share the workload, please contact to Steve Royce, (Chairman) and we will put your name forward at the next committee meeting. As always, will still need the support of the club members at events that we have planned for this season, so try your best to come and see us as much as possible. It was decided at this meeting that the membership fees for this year would remain unaltered from last year, with the hope that the additional revenue needed to run the club will be generated through good attendance at social events throughout the season. Attached to this Newsletter is your 2011 membership form, so please return it with your payment to the address at the bottom, by 21st April to avoid the rejoining fee.

For those who are not aware, we now have a full bar licence for the club and are planning regular days and nights where the club will be open for all members and their guests to come along and socialise (PLEASE SEE WEB SITE FOR DETAILS). We will also have a “What’s on?” board inside the clubhouse. We have already had a couple of social events this year at the club which were well supported and that we are keen to build on, we also have planned another horse racing night, quiz night and the usual kids day. We have also obtained a pool table and a dart board for your amusement - and the TV is back up and running. The club will also be available for members to hire for the day / evening at very reasonable rates. If you are interested then please contact Maxine who will give you full details.

This year Thanet Council are not hosting the “Big Event” Air show at Palm Bay; however we have been approached by the South East Power Boat Association who have asked us to host a National Powerboat Racing Event at Foreness Bay on 12th 13th and 14th August. This will consist of OCR race boats, and the Thunder Cat national series, racing on the Saturday and Sunday. This will be a huge undertaking for the club and we will be looking for as many volunteers as possible to assist us in this. We will need help with the bar, food preparation and serving, marshalling, boat launch and recovery, and safety boat duties on the water and generally “mucking in”, it should prove to be a very exciting weekend for all. If you are available to help in anyway please pencil in the date and we will be asking for confirmed commitment from as many people as possible at a meeting we are having at the clubhouse on Sunday 3rd April 7pm of which we would like as many of you as possible to attend so you can get a feel for what required.

The Club has purchased for members use, a 10 person banana to replace the club one that was destroyed in the fire. We would be grateful if any members have any “hand me down” life jackets, wet suits or other kit that could be used by other club members and their guests at the bay. We will also be clearing out the containers in the coming weeks to better accommodate the equipment; this will be done in conjunction with other work in and around the clubhouse at our Spring tidy up, on Sunday 10th April.

We are now affiliated to the RYA and can offer power boat training to level two, including the issue and renewal of ICC certificates. Hopefully from the end of April we will be able to undertake PWC training and certification as well. We are running a special offer on ALL our training for members of FWSBC for bookings placed and paid for in April (these can of course be undertaken latter in the year) of 25% of our advertised prices;

• Two day powerboat level two course - including RYA certification and ICC registration; £165.00 if you do this in your own boat, or £195.00 per person in instructor’s boat.
• One day (experienced helmsman only) - including RYA certification and ICC registration; £80.00 if you do this in your own boat, or £100.00 per person in instructors boat.
• We can also teach and certificate CEVNI qualification, which you will need if navigating in land waters of France, Germany, Belgium, at £30.00 including hand book.

Don’t forget, if you are buying or renewing any of your kit, Tribal Watersports are now the largest watersports shop in East Kent, with great stocks of wakeboards, bindings, waterskis, kneeboards, wakeskates, wetsuits, clothing, rash vest, impact jackets, wakeboard towers, and marine audio - all with a minimum of 10% discount for FWSBC members. So give Steve a Call on 0845 388 7065 or call in and see him at the revamped shop in Manston for a cuppa and a browse.

Remember, all craft used at FWSBC need to be insured. FWSBC are recognised by GJW marine insurance services and if you are a member you will get a discount, you will also get a discount if you hold a recognised RYA qualification. We now have wireless internet and a Vodafone booster for Vodafone 3G users, speak to Steve if you need help connecting. So here is to a long and warm summer, flat waters, good company and a happy and safe boating season. We are looking forward to seeing you all at the Bay.
